From the film “Is Everybody Happy?”, 1929

Music by Harry Akst
The sheet music:
Lyrics
- I’ve heard about a lot of people
Suff’rin’ from the weary blues
And so I went among the people
To see if I could change their views
And then I told them all together
“This is what I’ve come to preach
Sadness is a curse, there is nothing worse”
Here’s the way I made my speech
Refrain:
“Don’t you know who I am
With this horn in my hand
I’m the medicine man for the blues
I’ll make each trouble and care
Seem like a bubble of air
With my old Clarinet
What results I can get
There’s been no troubles yet I can’t lose
Just trust the medicine man for the blues
When you’re down-hearted, I bring a smile
When life makes you sick
My music can make life seem worth while
I don’t bring any pills
For your fever and chills
But with musical thrills I amuse
I’m called the medicine man for the blues
- It’s my desire just to unravel
Everybody’s cares and woe
And so most any place I travel
Why happiness is bound to flow
When I meet someone who’s complaining
I keep handing out this cheer
“Laugh at your cares
Make them my affairs
That’s the reason I’m here”
