Lyrics

  1. We could have had a baby brother,
    Hadn’t it been for Dad and Mother;
    Arguing always the way they do,
    Over the least little nothings, too.
    For instance while dancing they squabble,
    And they’ve squabbled their long life through.

Chorus
Father wanted to two-step,
And Mother wanted to waltz.
Full of pep they got up for a spin;
Took one step and then sat down again.
Everyone laughed because they stumbled,
The band fumbled on to their faults.
Father wanted to two-step,
And Mother wanted to waltz.

2. Father’s going collegiate,
And Mother sticks to her waltz.
Old fashioned dances were Mother’s delight;
Old fashioned cocktails made Father feel right.
Poor Father just wants to go places,
But Mother begins and she halts.
‘Cause Papa wants to make whoopee,
And Mama wants to make waltz.
