Lyrics

  1. Marjorie loved a soldier
    He was brave and true
All day she’d stand and wave her hand
And wipe her eyes so blue
    The day that he departed
With grief her eyes were red
The music played the last parade
And this is what she said

Chorus
“Adieu! Adieu! Adieu!
Adieu!” said Marjorie
“Adieu my life, my joy
Adieu! my soldier boy
Adieu! Adieu! Adieu!
Come back to me again
Be true to me ’till then, Adieu”

  1. Marjorie wrote a letter
    Her soldier boy to tell
“Her eyes were dim, she thought of him
    And hoping he was well”
She started to mail this letter
    But went to walk instead
An officer he smiled at her
Now what do you think she said?

Chorus
“How do! How do! How do!
How do!” said Marjorie
“A galant officer you must be I infer
How do! How do! How do!
You wish to shake my hand
You really mustn’t, and How do!”

  1. Marjorie got invited
    That very afternoon
To go to a Ball at a dancing hall
On the arm of this new found spoon
    “Now Marjorie,” said this fellow
    “Sorrow will turn your head
I think that we should married be”
Now what do you think she said?

Chorus
“I do! I do! I do!
I do!” said Marjorie
“I do believe we should
I do believe we could
I do! I do! I do!
I thank you for the thought
To wed I think we ought, I do!”

  1. Marjorie soon got ready
    Together they went to church
    But the war was o’er
    And there at the door
Was the boy left in the lurch
    Her soldier knew his business
He cut off her escorts head
She rolled her eyes in mild surprise
And what do you think she said?

Chorus
“Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu!
Mon Dieu!” said Marjorie
“How could a maiden tell
When she had said “farewell”
Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu!
My love it would endure
But I tho’t they’d kill you sure, Mon Dieu!”

  1. Marjorie soon was married
    Unto her soldier lad
And all went well for quite a spell
But one day he got mad
A big bill came for a theatre hat
    “Settle at once,” it said
“Oh! Marjorie, can such things be
What do you think she said?

Chorus
“It’s due! It’s due! It’s due!
It’s due!” said Marjorie
“You needn’t look so pale
I bought it at a sale
It’s due! It’s due! It’s due!
I don’t think you should frown
The price has been marked down, It’s due!”

  1. Marjorie’s husband’s cousin
    Came to visit her
Oh! she was green, about nineteen
She’d stand all day and purr
    Now Marjorie caught her kissing
    “Cousin’s dear tired head”
    She called for a dray
    And sent her away
And this is what she said

Chorus
“Hoo-doo! Hoo-doo! Hoo-doo!’
Hoo-doo!” said Marjorie
“These female cousins are
The cause of many a jar
Hoo-doo! Hoo-doo! Hoo-doo!
I made the bold thing clear
We’ll have no cousins here, Hoo-doo!”
